As a new or expecting parent, you may be unfamiliar with the term ‘muslin’ or ‘muslin fabric’. If you've got a little one on the way, you'll want to know all about muslin. Here, you'll find out all about the fabric, it’s benefits and how you can use muslin with your new baby.

It’s a breathable and finely-woven fabric made from cotton lightweight and soft to the touch.

What is the difference between cotton and muslin?
If you take a look in your closet you'll likely find many of your favourite clothes made from tightly woven and dense cotton. In contrast, muslin feels like you're being surrounded by a cloud - it's extremely light and soft! This incredible fabric was once known as mousseline due to its foam-like softness. Due to its gentle touch, muslin is ideal for baby wraps, cot sheets, and other garments that come into contact with sensitive skin. Our products are made exclusively with 100% certified organic cotton muslin so it’s extra gentle on a newborn skin.

Where did muslin get its name?
The origin of muslin has long been debated. Some say the name originated from Marco Polo's description of the cotton trade in Mosul (modern day Iraq). However, fashion historian Susan Greene believes that the term ‘muslin’ is derived from mousse, the French word for ‘foam.’ The Encyclopedia Britannica also claims that the fabric originated in Mosul, Iraq. Other researchers suggest that muslin originated in Ducca (modern day Dhaka), Bangladesh. Referred to as 'mul mul' by Bangladeshi people, the fabric was renowned throughout the region.
